The NSS unit of PEC University of Technology in collaboration with the PGI, organised an awareness session on 'ORGAN DONATION' at PEC auditorium on 17th September 2015, that was attended by large number of students and faculty of PEC.
Dr. R.K. Dhiman, MD, DM, Department of Hepatology, PGI who is the pioneer in this region and the man behind this drive, emphasised the importance of this movement. He described the procedural and other details involved, shattering many myths surrounding the Organ Donation. Sharing his experiences at the PGI, the many success stories he could relate with, he told that promoting this cause has become his passion. He urged the audience that by consenting to be an organ donor after death, one can make a huge difference-giving a second chance at life- not just to one person but one can save or improve as many as 50 lives. Citing the global stats, he lamented that despite being the world's largest populace, we lag far behind many smaller nations like Spain and Austria.
Towards the end of the session, Dr. Dhiman, very patiently, answered the queries by, in his own words, 'a very interactive group' , allaying the fears of the few regarding the class bias in allocating organs; he affirmed the reality is that the celebrity and financial status are not considered in organ allocation.
