The Department of Aerospace Engineering at Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh organized an insightful guest lecture on 07th April, 2025 by Shri Yogesh Kumar, a distinguished alumnus from the batch of 1968. Currently serving as a Sr. consultant and Specialist Designer in CSIR-NAL, Shri Yogesh Kumar shared his extensive experience in the field of Aircraft and Aircraft Systems through a vast topic on "Future Technologies in Aeronautical LCA and Beyond" drawing inputs from his impressive career, Shri Kumar captivated the audience with personal stories and professional insights.
The session was graced by a stellar gathering of dignitaries and experts including Prof. S.C. Sharma (Former Head, AED), Prof. Rakesh Kumar (Head, AED), Er. Manish Gupta (President, PECOSA), Dr. Deepak Lekhi (Additional Regional Director, RCMA, Chandigarh), Mr. Vivek Kalotra (Regional Director, RCMA, Chandigarh), Dr. Subhash Chandra (Additional Director, DGRE, DRDO, Chandigarh), members of the Aeronautical Society of India, faculty members, and students from the department.
Delivering the keynote address on the theme “Future Technologies in Aeronautical LCA and Beyond,” Shri Yogesh Kumar captivated the audience with a compelling blend of professional insights and personal anecdotes. Drawing from his illustrious career, he delved into the evolution and significance of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and its associated systems—describing it as a technological marvel and one of the most ambitious R&D programs in Indian aerospace history.
He highlighted key aspects such as the Digital Fly-by-Wire System, Flat Rated Engines, Advanced Sensors, Multi-Mode Radar, and the adaptability embedded within the LCA framework. Shri Kumar elaborated on the current status of LCA technologies, the collaborative efforts of various teams involved in the TEJAS Program under the Government of India, and the path towards future innovations.
His address further touched upon critical domains such as Integrated Power Plant Systems, Electronic Warfare, 5th Generation Multi-mission Combat Aircraft (MCA), Avionics Integration, Engine Health Monitoring Systems, and even offered thought-provoking insights into emerging Sixth Generation Fighter technologies. Encouraging the students to embrace innovation and proactively seek opportunities, Shri Kumar emphasized the core competencies essential to thrive in both airline operations and the aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
During his tenure at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Shri Yogesh Kumar led several landmark programs including the LCA, the International Jet Trainer (IJT), and the Avionics Upgrade of the Jaguar aircraft. He also served as Chief of Design at HAL’s Lucknow Division and has authored two acclaimed books on project management and execution in engineering contexts.
His exemplary contributions have earned him numerous accolades including the National Aeronautical Prize (2000), National Acclamation Prize (1988), Raksha Mantri Award for Excellence (2003–04), Scientist of the Year (2001), Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), Alumnus Award of Excellence (2018), and the International Project Management Award (2005). He was also honoured with the prestigious Noel Deerr Gold Medal (1987) and received the National Aeronautical Prize from Air Chief Marshal A.Y. Tipnis, Chief of Air Staff, in January 2001.
Shri Yogesh Kumar was welcomed and honoured at the end of interaction by Prof. S.C. Sharma, (Former Head, AED-PEC) and Prof. Rakesh Kumar, Head of Aerospace Engineering Department by presenting a memento as a token of gratitude and appreciation for his enlightening lecture and contributions to the field of aerospace engineering. Lastly, Dr. Deepak Lekhi provided the official vote of thanks. The event was a resounding success, leaving the audience inspired and more passionate about their future in aerospace engineering.
