A workshop was organized on "IoT for Smart City Task Force" by PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh on 10th October 2016 to discuss various issues related to smart city- Chandigarh. The workshop was started with the lighting of the lamp and welcome address by Prof. Manoj K.Arora, Director, PEC. It was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Sh. Parimal Rai, Advisor to Administrator. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Sh. Anurag Agarwal, Home Secretary, Sh. Sarvjit Singh, Finance Secretary, Sh. Baldeo Purushartha, Commissioner Municipal Corporation and participants from PEC, UIET, NITTTR, CSIO, CDAC, INST etc.
Prof. Arun Grover, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh gave an overview of CRIKC in the beginning. He also emphasized the requirements and infrastructure needed for smart city.
Prof. Bharadwaj Amrutur, IISc addressed the gathering with an overview of Internet of Things for smart city and challenges for the implementation of solutions.
A city is called a smart city if it is Healthy, Happy and Happening (3Hs) as quoted by Sh. Parimal Rai, Advisor to Administrator. Another need of the hour for smart city is secured environment.
Sh. Anurag Agarwal, Home Secretary, highlighted the presence of essentials like proper town planning, sewerage and storm system etc in Chandigarh for deserving it to be a smart city and ended by saying that we are here to learn most appropriate technologies to solve problems.
Sh. Sarvjit Singh, Finance Secretary, talked about the valuable guidance from expertise who have come to direct us and called it a happy day.
Sh. Baldeo Purushartha, Commissioner Municipal Corporation gave an overall Smart City Vision and Plan for Chandigarh. He also discussed the SWOT analysis of smart city proposal of Chandigarh.
Other presentations on Transportation and Water Energy were given by Sh. Amit Talwar, Director Transport and Sh. Mukesh Anand, Chief Engineer, U.T. respectively.
Presentations by IOT4SCTF representatives include ' Principles, Methodology and Approach' by Bipin Kumar, 'Building a Scalable Architecture' by Abhijit Lele, RfP Guidelines - A Framework for RfPs for India, Appropriate Solutions for Smart Cities by Ms. Pamela Kumar , Use Case Analysis for Smart Cities by Ms. Ranjani B etc. were highly informative and provided useful insights.
Post lunch session includes 'Shared integrated e-governance and citizen platform', 'Integrated Safety and Traffic Management System', 'Water and Energy'. It was followed by Suggestions and Recommendations session in which useful solutions were suggested by the participants. Sh. Anurag Agarwal expressed the need of city specific solution from the task force for Chandigarh smart city.
It is recommended that specific groups consisting of members from Chandigarh Administration, PEC/CRIKC and IOT4SCTF will be formed and they will meet once in a week to discuss the problems regarding smart city. Task force will also do SWOT analysis of each component of Chandigarh smart city proposal. Several new technologies which are in sight like automatic metering, smart grids, developing power exchange platform, waste management, green corridor etc. were also discussed.
