With the number of college graduates rising every year, employers must be strategic in selection of the recruits. The industry nowadays not only looks for technical skills but also the overall personality of its recruits. To bridge the gap between requirements of the industry and the skills of the students, Finishing school, a brainchild of the training and placement office was organized by PEC University of Technology from 31st July to 2nd August, 2015 for final and pre-final year students. It aimed at inculcating the basic soft skills required by every student when entering for the recruitment process of any company. These skills include personal interview, SWOT (Strength Weakness Opportunity Threat) analysis, writing skills, group discussion, communication skills and case study.
This concept received an overwhelming response as 400 students registered for it. Experts were called from around the region to deliver lectures to the students. Mr. Amit Hans, an HR trainer who has been in education and training sector for over 12 years gave an insightful session on group discussions and management. His vast knowledge and experience proved to be of an invaluable contribution towards the overall development of the students. Mr. Rajesh Chadha, a management-marketing professional and an author-poet was invited for a session on communication skills where he enlightened the students on the importance of spoken ability. Prof. Anju Mehta, with her command over the English language and 22-year teaching experience handled sessions on writing skills. SWOT analysis was taken by Mrs. Mehak Kapoor, a psychologist with more than 10 years of experience in Soft Skills, who helped students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and suggested methods to improve on the very same. Also, personal interview sessions were taken up by Mr. Rohit Kwatra, a PEC-IIM Calcutta alumnus, who taught students the nuances of how to conduct themselves during the interview. Finally, Mr. Saurabh Jaiswal, an engineering graduate from NIT Nagpur enlightened the students about the basics of guesstimates and real life case studies.
Dr. Manoj K Arora, Director, PEC interacted with the students during the workshop and congratulated the Training and Placement office for the successfulness of the event. The students gained knowledge from every session and enjoyed the Group Discussion sessions, where they participated in well-facilitated discussions giving them an opportunity to explore new ideas while recognizing the contributions of others.
