Civil Engineering Department of PEC University of Technology organized a meeting on 28th April 2015 to pay tribute to the victims of Nepal Earthquake tragedy. Faculty members and students of the department attended the same. A two minute silence was observed to show the solidarity for the victims of this natural calamity. Prof. Manoj K. Arora, Director, PEC University of Technology through his words showed the support to the victims of the hazard including the Nepalese students of the institute who were also present. Prof. Siby John informed that though the hazards are inevitable but the adoption of proper engineering practices can be helpful to mitigate the damage and stop them from becoming a natural calamity. This was followed by a presentation by Prof. L.N. Sharma, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department PEC on "Earthquakes; A Natural Phenomenon: What's Humanly Possible" in which he told about how people can be more prepared before, during and after for the natural calamities such as earthquakes. He gave technical insights into the natural processes which trigger earthquakes and informed that as much as 56% of the India's land areas and the complete land area of Nepal is vulnerable to seismic activity. The whole Nepal area is under the zone which is prone to high magnitude earthquake. In his talk Dr. Sharma emphasized the need of the paradigm shift from disaster to risk management which can be achieved by managing response to disasters and the underlying conditions. Director, PEC concluded the meeting by appreciating the effort of the Civil Engineering Department. He has urged the envirovision club of the institute to own the responsibility to spread awareness of such natural hazards to the local community.
