The Department of Mathematics at Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh, organised a six-day Teacher’s Enrichment Workshop (TEW) on Real Analysis and Group Theory today. The workshop was organized with the support of the National Centre for Mathematics (NCM), a joint initiative of IIT Bombay and TIFR, Mumbai.
The inaugural session witnessed the presence of the workshop conveners—Prof. Asha Gupta (Head, Department of Mathematics), Dr. Rattan Lal, and Dr. Ankit Kumar—who welcomed all participants and outlined the objectives of the programme. The workshop was being held under the patronage of the esteemed Director of PEC, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Bhatia. Distinguished academician Dr. Surinder Pal Singh Kainth (PU, Chandigarh) was present as one of the speakers during the inauguration.
This six-day academic initiative was to provide college-level mathematics educators with a comprehensive understanding of the foundational as well as advanced principles of Real Analysis and Group Theory. The workshop covered significant topics such as limits, continuity, differentiability, and convergence of sequences, while also addressing core concepts that form the basis of Group Theory. Participants gained exposure to the logical structure of mathematical proofs, the abstract nature of the subject, and various strategies to simplify complex mathematical ideas for teaching purposes.
A key feature of the workshop included discussion forums, tutorial sessions, and interactive problem-solving modules, enabling participants to engage directly with experts, clarify doubts, and deepen their conceptual understanding. These sessions were designed to strengthen mathematical reasoning and foster a clearer appreciation of the theoretical framework underlying advanced mathematics.
Throughout the six days workshop, there were lectures by eminent scholars such as Prof. Dinesh Khurana (PU, Chandigarh), Dr. Varadharaj Ravi Srinivasan (IISER, Mohali), Dr. Surinder Pal Singh Kainth (PU, Chandigarh), and Dr. Saurabh Verma (IIIT, Allahabad). Their expertise and scholarly insights significantly enriched the learning experience of the participants.
