Every year NSS Day is celebrated on 24th September across India. The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government sector public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. In 1950, the First Education Commission recommended the introduction of National Service by students on a voluntary basis. In April,1967, the conference of State Education Ministers recommended the University students be permitted to join the National Cadet Corps. This was already in existence on a voluntary basis. Finally, an alternative was offered in the form of a new program called the National Service Scheme (NSS). NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969 , the birth centenary year of the father of the nation, aimed at developing a student's personality through community service. The motto of NSS is” NOT ME BUT YOU” which expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. NSS aims at demonstrating this motto through its day-to-day programmes.
