PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh organized Industry Academia Expert Lecture Week from 26th September to 30th September 2016. It witnessed number of renowned speakers from various industries and scientists from different institutes in the region. The purpose of organizing Industry Academia Expert Lecture Week was to give platform to the students to interact with distinguished experts which further also strengthen the institute-industry interaction. A number of lectures were organized by all the departments in various subjects to provide the latest information in the respective fields to the students.
The Industry Academia Expert Lecture week started with a huge success in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The first lecture was given by Mr. Vineet R. Tripathi, Head Blast Furnace Operations, Tata Steel Jamshedpur (MMED, 2003). The topic of his lecture was "Technological advancements in Blast Furnaces'. He talked in detail about the Internal steel scenario, Process improvement Instrumentation, Process optimization through Blast Furnace Modelling, Sustainable Development-system Installations and Indian Blast Furnace Transformation in Tata steel. On the second day, Mr. VarinderVerma, Senior Metallurgy Consultant, Milestone Gears, Baddi, H.P (MMED, 1984) spoke on the topic, "Isothermal Annealing of Carburizing grade steels: A case study. Mr. Verma explained the basics of Heat treatment processes in the gears used in Automotive industries.
On the third day, the lecture was given by Mr. Rajkumar Chopra, Production Manager, Aarti steel, Ludhiana on the topic, "Recent Trends in Steel making". Mr. Chopra covered the complete process of steel making starting from the iron making to continuous casting. On the fourth day, the lecture was given by Mr. Mallikarjun Vempati, Principal Consultant, Tech Mahindra Ltd (MMED 1982) on the topic, "Academics to Industry". He shared his view that man and machine have to connect to create automated processes. He emphasized upon the fact to accept no limits, go for alternate thinking and driving for positive change. The lecture was given by young, dynamic and vigilant Mr. Yogesh Arora (Computer Engineer). He launched the India's First Online Store- FLIP KEYS for Duplicate Keys. His talk covered all the aspects about being a successful Entrepreneur.
An expert lecture on "Importance of IPRs in WTO Era and Valuation of Patents" was organized by the Humanities Section of Applied Sciences Department on 28 September 2016 during for the students of B. E 2nd year. Prof. Sudhir k. Jain, IIT Delhi was the keynote speaker for the occasion. Prof. Jain discussed in detail about the concept of IPRs, major forms of Intellectual property Rights - their purpose, conditions, reasons, importance with some popular examples. He touched upon the GATT Negotiations, TRIPS and WTO in brief. He also threw light on copyright and mentioned the various treaties and agreements of Indian government relating to copyrights in India. The session was enriching for the students and it ended up with question and answer session.
The Humanities Section of the Applied Sciences Department organized an Expert Lecture on the Subject 'Ethics and Self Awareness' on 30th Sep 2016 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the PEC Auditorium. Ms. Twinkle Gupta, a resource person from Infosys India Ltd (Chandigarh office) was the key note speaker. She threw light on various concepts of ethics like beliefs, values, Self Awareness, Self Development, Business Ethics, teamwork etc. She concluded the lecture with the take away tips for the development of ethical principles at the workplace. Also she invited students to ask questions in the end. The lecture ended with the felicitation of the speaker with a memento.
An Interactive session by Mr. Rajinder Singh Gujral, Director (operations) Vardhaman Chemtech Ltd. was held on 28th September 2016, on the topic " Process Development- A Science or an Art" in Seminar room of Applied Sciences Department in PEC. The art and sciences behind the process development in industrial process was highlighted. The emphasis was made on 4M- strategy for obtaining success in industrial growth. The 4 M's include Man, Machine, Material and money / cost involved in the process. The steps for development of a process such as identification of constraint, strength checking, solution finding approach, improvement and monitoring of desired result were enlightened. The session was attended by B.E. 1st year students, faculty members and PhD scholars.
