Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh, organized a Birth Anniversary Tribute Event commemorating the life, contributions, and enduring legacy of Prof. Satish Dhawan, one of the most distinguished alumni of the institute and a pioneering figure in Indian science and technology. The event was organized under the guidance of Prof. Rajesh Bhatia, and witnessed the participation of faculty members, guests, students, and members of the PEC community.
The programme commenced with a welcome address, followed by a brief highlighting the remarkable achievements and legacy of Prof. Satish Dhawan. A graduate of Punjab Engineering College in 1945 with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Dhawan went on to become one of the leading figures in modern scientific India. Widely regarded as the “Father of Experimental Fluid Dynamics in India,” he served as the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from 1972 to 1984, providing visionary leadership to the Indian space programme during a transformative period.
The event highlighted several significant contributions made under his leadership, including the launch of India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, in 1975, and the development of the SLV-3 rocket, which laid the foundations for subsequent space programmes such as INSAT and PSLV. His pioneering work in boundary-layer research and contributions to experimental fluid dynamics further established his legacy in the field of scientific research. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota stands as a lasting tribute to his contributions to India’s space programme.
A documentary showcasing the life, achievements, and journey of Prof. Satish Dhawan was screened for the audience. The screening provided an opportunity for participants to gain deeper insights into his remarkable career, scientific contributions, leadership, and his association with Punjab Engineering College.
Following the screening, an open-floor session was organized, inviting faculty members, students, guests, and members of the audience to share their thoughts, memories, and reflections on Prof. Satish Dhawan and his enduring contribution to Indian science and technology. The interactive session provided an opportunity for the PEC community to reflect upon his scientific excellence, leadership, humility, and lasting legacy.
The programme concluded with expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty members, guests, students, organizers, and all participants for their presence and contribution to the tribute event.
