Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh is having an Industry-Academia Expert Lecture Week from 20-24 March, 2023. On the third day of the week, 22nd March 2023, the Centre of Management and Humanities (CMH), organized two sessions on “Group Discussion” for B.Tech., M.Tech. and PhD students, conducted by Amit Hans, who is a young entrepreneur, corporate trainer, and Ted speaker.
The session began with a floral welcome of the eminent speaker by the Head CMH Dr. Anju Singla. Thereafter, the speaker explained to the students the nuances of how they should take part and perform in group discussion which is an essential part of the corporate selection process as well as selection for several other public and private sector jobs. He shared with the student’s certain techniques to overcome the initial inhibition for speaking or addressing at a public platform, and to gradually build on their confidence. He cleared several misconceptions about GD. He pointed out that they should not reduce group discussion into a debate or one-to-one argument with others, nor should they try to win the argument. Rather, GD should be considered as a team activity, and other members as part of the team, instead of competitors.
The session ended with a formal vote of thanks. The students found the sessions highly interactive, engaging and encouraging, and sharpened their skills of GD and public speaking.
