The Cyber Security Research Centre (CSRC), PEC proudly announces the successful conclusion of a momentous three-month-long course on cybercrime, investigations, and digital forensics for police officers. Spearheaded by Prof. Divya Bansal, Prof. & Head of Cyber security research centre, in a collaborative effort of 12 instructors from academia and industry, the course aimed at enhancing officer's skills in dealing with modern-day cyber threats.

The course was distinguished by cutting-edge content, incorporating extensive Technology-Driven Case Studies for a state-of-the-art learning experience. Addressing both Technical and Legal aspects, the course featured a team of 12 instructors from esteemed academic institutions (PEC, IIITs, NIT) and industry leaders (from Microsoft, SAS, IBM, CDAC).

The course covered a range of topics, including:

  • Common Banking Frauds: UPI Frauds, Cloning, and Phishing
  • Investigation of Fin-Tech Cases like ATM frauds, OTP frauds, OLX frauds, etc.
  • Investigating VOIP phone calls, Dark-web investigations, botnets, honeypots
  • Social Media and OSINT, using IPDR, extensive Metadata, and log analysis.
  • Tracking, Tracing, and Trapping of Suspects/Criminals using GPS, Cell ID
  • Understanding and Interpretation of IT Act, IPC, CrPC

Course Highlights:

  • A total of 31 participants, ranging from SSP to HC, showcased remarkable engagement and a strong desire to tackle high-technology real-time cases, resulting in five distinctions.
  • Prof. Divya Bansal while sharing her experience during the course as chief course coordinator and the instructor said, “all the participants including the Senior rank officers approached class assignments with the enthusiasm of curious students, maintaining strict discipline by prohibiting the use of phones”.
  • Participants consistently exhibited traits of being keen, curious, and sincere learners throughout the course, attending all sessions with great diligence.
  • Classes were conducted on Friday’s afternoons and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm, providing an interactive platform where participants actively engaged by asking questions.

Prof. Baldev Setia in his address extended a heartfelt congratulations to all participants and acknowledged the support and commitment of the senior leadership throughout the course. He also congratulated the participants who received distinctions, including Sh. Ketan Bansal, IPS; Sh. Jasbir Singh, DSP/Sec. HQ and Ops.; Const. Amandeep Walia; Const. Akash Kumar- 2106/CP; HC Yogesh Kumar-2029/CP. The leadership of DGP Sh. Praveer Ranjan was acknowledged, highlighting his exceptional commitment to collaborating with academic institutions. His transformative initiatives, including the launch of training programs and Cyber Swachhta Mission, have set a benchmark for excellence in law enforcement skills and have significantly contributed to empowering the city youth and enhancing the safety and well-being of the citizens of Chandigarh.

Deep appreciation was expressed for Professor Baldev Setia, Director of PEC, for unwavering support and optimism. Sh. Praveen Ranjan, IPS, DGP expressed his deepest gratitude to Director Baldev Setia for providing such a rigorous yet fruitful academic learning environment to the police for their professional growth in the area of technology-based crimes and investigations.

Mr. Ketan Bansal, IPS, SP, Chandigarh, shared his experience of the 3 months course held at PEC. He also shared his valuable feedback and experience stating that the course incorporated all the possible latest topics and challenges which are being faced by the police today. After the course, he felt confident that the cops who have undergone the course will be able to navigate through most intricate technology-based crimes as well.

Ms. Kanwardeep Kaur, IPS, SSP, Chandigarh shared her insights on the technological advancements in cellular devices as well as in all the areas of technology that are happening at a very fast pace from the past 2 decades. Criminals also have access to these integrated newer technologies. She thanked Director, PEC for his leadership, Coordinators of the course for being flexible in including new courses in the program.

W/DGP, UT Chandigarh, Sh. Praveen Ranjan, IPS, expressed his deepest regard towards Director Prof. (Dr.) Baldev Setia, prof. Divya Bansal, all the instructors and PEC. He shed the light on digital transformation on digital securities and cyber securities. He expressed the need for technologies and dealing with challenges associated with advanced technologies. He said that we had built up that technological capacity in Chandigarh to solve the cases, especially cybercrime cases increasing at a much faster pace. He also talked about the cyber Swachhta Mission initiated by UT Police, the awareness & impact it brings for the citizens with a variety of activities and designed programs. Lastly, he congratulated the participants for their dedication, zeal and enthusiasm and he also thanked PEC for this association for this technological Advanced Executive Course on Information Security and Digital Forensics.
