Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University) proudly inaugurated its much-anticipated 76th Annual Athletic Meet 2024 today. The event was graced by the esteemed S. Rajpal Singh Hundal, an eminent Olympian and former captain of the Indian Hockey Team, who served as the Chief Guest. The Guest of Honour was S. Baljit Singh, another distinguished Olympian and Honorary Recognition Awardee. They were joined by Prof. Uma Batra, Officiating Director of PEC, Dr. D.R. Prajapati, Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. M.P. Garg, Additional Dean of Student Affairs, and other faculty members.
Dr. D.R. Prajapati began the ceremony by welcoming the dignitaries and expressing gratitude for their presence. He highlighted the achievements of PEC students who have excelled in national and international sports tournaments, mentioning notable achievers such as Nanaki from CSE and Bhavtegh, from AED.
Prof. Uma Batra extended a warm welcome to Mr. Hundal and Mr. Singh, commending the efforts of the Dean of Student Affairs for organizing such a vibrant event. She emphasized that sports not only promote physical strength but also enhance emotional and mental well-being. Prof. Batra congratulated the students, staff, and organizers on this momentous occasion.
In his address, Chief Guest S. Rajpal Singh Hundal reminisced about his student days at PEC and praised the institution's legacy. He remarked, "Sports teaches us to be within our limits to win the race." He likened students to planes that must take flight from humble beginnings to reach great heights. He stressed the importance of discipline, hard work, and focus in achieving one's goals, stating, "In sports, we learn about winning, losing, and how to gracefully accept both." He concluded by congratulating the students and organizers for their participation in the Athletic Meet.
Guest of Honour S. Baljit Singh encouraged students to engage in sports and physical activities to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He noted, "Sports instills mental resilience, physical fitness, and strength."
The ceremony commenced with a March Past by the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Cadets. The institute's flag was ceremoniously unfurled by the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, and other dignitaries.
The first day of the 76th Annual Athletic Meet concluded successfully, featuring numerous track and field events with enthusiastic participation from students across all PEC branches. Notable events included the 100 meters and 200 meters races for boys and girls, alongside exciting activities such as cycling events, hurdle races, inter-branch relays, tug of war, and fun athletic contests.
The day's proceedings concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Dr. Amandeep Kaur, followed by the felicitation of the dignitaries by the esteemed Director and the Dean of Student Affairs.
