An International conference on Sustainable Civil Engineering Practices was held from 02-03 March, 2017 by the Civil Engineering Department of PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh in collaboration with Chitkara University, Himachal Pradesh and NITTTR, Chandigarh.
The conference was attended by 122 delegates from within India as well as abroad. Participants from India, France, Afghanistan and Australia attended and presented papers in the conference. The Inaugural Session of the conference was attended by Dr R P Singh, Secretary General of Quality Council of India and Prof. B. Nagaragan from IIT Kanpur. It was also attended by Dr. Manoj Arora, Director PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh, Dr. Madhu Chitkara, Pro-chancellor of Chitkara University and Dr. P. K. Tulsi, Officiating Director NITTTR, Chandigarh. Dr. Siby John Professor and Head Civil Engineering Department, PEC University of Technology, Chandigarh welcomed the guests and introduced the theme of the conference. It was highlighted that the theme of the conference is timely especially in the wake of national efforts to develop smart cities. The need of environmental management in consistency with the developmental activities was brought out.
On day 1, Key Note addresses by eminent personalities like Sh. Pralhad Mujumdar, CEO- Concrete Business, ACC Concrete, ACC Limited Mumbai; Dr. Kulwant Singh, Coordinator, Smart Move High Level Group India, UN- Habitat, Bentley Mr. Ganesh Deshmukh, technical Manager, Civil Design (South Asia), Dr. Ashish Juneja, Professor, IIT Bombay.
On day 2, four parallel technical sessions were conducted presenting around 60 technical pares highlighting different themes of sustainable civil engineering. Participants presented their research on: use of waste materials for sustainable construction of roads, buildings, bridges etc., safety assessment. The innovative practices for making Civil Engineering more sustainable wer highlighted.
Valedictory session was attended by Anil K. Banchhor, Dr. Sunil Pandey, Dr. Siby John, Dr. Sanjay Sharma, Dr. Manoj Arora, Dr. Varinder S Kanwar and Brig. (Dr.) R.S. Grewal and. All the participants were awarded with a token of appreciation and a certificate of participation.
