Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University), Chandigarh, in collaboration with IEEE Chandigarh, Subsection and Head, Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy, today, organized an expert talk on “Single-walled Carbon Nanotube Growth by Alcohol Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition”. The eminent speaker of the expert talk was Prof. Takahiro Maruyama, Professor of the Department of Applied Chemistry at Meijo University, Nagoya, Japan. Prof. Takahiro Maruyama completed his Graduation in the Faculty of Science at Kyoto University, PhD at Kyoto University and Postdoctoral studies at the University of Tsukuba and Ritsumeikan University. He is the Director of the Nanomaterials Research Center at Meijo University. He has published more than 180 papers in peer-reviewed international journals. His present area of research includes the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials.The event started with a floral welcome to the Guest speaker by Prof Baldev Setia, Director of PEC.

Prof. Arun Kumar Singh started the session with a brief introduction to the expert lecture. He stated that the lecture aims to give a platform to researchers, academicians and young minds to discuss innovative ideas and learn from the experts in the field.

Prof. Baldev Setia, Director-PEC, extended a warm welcome to Prof. Takahiro Maruyama and the members present. He gave a brief intro about the rich history of PEC and complimented the organising team for conducting such an enlightening lecture. He motivated the students to make the most of the session from the best minds in the field.

Prof. Takahiro Maruyama in his expert lecture stated that Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibit tremendous properties; therefore, they have a huge potential in electronics applications. Talking about the applications of CNT, he stated that it is used for Coating of screens of mobiles, memory applications with high staircase capacity, and CNT transistors to work at very fast speed for high frequency applications. Mechanical applications include coating of CNT on materials to increase strength of materials like metal for machines, rubber for tyres etc.In the first part, he talked about SWCNT growth by alcohol catalytic chemical vapour deposition (ACCVD) using platinum-group metals as catalysts. In the second part, he showed in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis for transition metal catalysts during SWCNT growth. Talking about the results of the studies he mentioned the result showed that the chemical states of metal catalysts show a marked difference between iron-group elements and platinum-group ones.

The lecture progressed with a question-answer session and interactions with the present members. The event ended with Prof. Arun Kumar Singh, extending a vote of thanks. The lecture was attended by Deans, Faculty members, students and research scholars.
