National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University) Chandigarh today organized an AWARENESS PROGRAM ON DRUG DE-ADDICTION at the campus. Dr. Nelu, a highly accomplished psychotherapist who has been practicing in the United States for the past 28 years, was the guest speaker for the event. The event was organized with an aim to provide insights to the students about substance abuse and its side effects in life. The event started with a floral welcome of the chief guest by Dr. Jaimala Gambhir.
Dr Nelu started the session by apprising students about the stages of substance use, substance abuse and addiction. She also focused on the normalization of demonstration of drug use in movies which has an impact on our minds and its consequences in our daily life. Talking about the current status of drug abuse in India, she also mentioned that addiction of drugs in today’s youth is also because of misunderstanding of westernization and the concept of modernization. She informed the students of various stages of substance abuse and the signs that can help one notice it. Dr Nelu encouraged the students to help others leave the path of drug use and be the change in the society.
The session progressed with a question answer session and ended with an activity in which students were asked to fill a questionnaire.The Program was attended by around 150 volunteers who found it really interesting and informative.
