PUNJAB ENGINEERING COLLEGE (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY), CHANDIGARH, today commenced its much-awaited 75th Annual Athletic meet-2023 aiming at the overall growth and development of its students. Olympian and Padma Shree awardee Shri. Ajit Singh, was the Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony. Guest of Honour was esteemed Lt. Col. SS Boparai (Retd.), who played a remarkable role in the 1971 war. The event started with a floral welcome of the Chief Guest along with Guest of Honour by Prof. (Dr.) Baldev Setia, Director, PEC; Dr. D.R. Prajapati (Dean of Student Affairs) and Dr. Sarabjit Singh, ADSA (Sports). The event continued with a very synchronised parade by the NCC Cadets, NSS Volunteers and Sports Committee led by Sports Secretaries.
Chief Guest Shri. Ajit Singh, sharing his life achievements and glimpses of the past sports life states that, "I along with my mates, was always ahead in sports activities. We used to get good grades due to Sports Participation. All the teamwork, physical health, attitude towards life, is shaped by your sports induced activities. We thrived for games, tournaments and competition."
Shri Ajit Singh was Awarded with Padma Shree in the year and Dhyan Chand Award in 2020 for his outstanding contributions in the field of Hockey. Remembering his father, he quoted, "Padhoge likhoge banoge kharab, kheloge kudoge banoge nawab". Education includes the overall growth of a child and sports plays a huge role in it'' he said.
Our renowned Guest of Honor; Lt. Col. SS Boparai (Retd.) had been a remarkable Army Man in 1971 war, was a National Level Volleyball and Athletics Representative. He is also a qualified official of the Volleyball Federation India. Along with this, serving as the Headmaster of a Sainik School, he continued to excel in corporate and teaching fields, further exemplifying his versatile talents and commitment to excellence. While addressing the audience he states, about the 4S,(Sense, Speed, Strength and Stamina), which we should include in our lives. To maintain Balance, attitude towards life, which keeps you at heights. Furthermore, He drew a comparison between the lives of sportspersons and saints, highlighting that as saints practice meditation for spiritual growth, sports people devote themselves to their sports for personal development." In the end, he also quoted, "Remain fit today, to win tomorrow".
Prof. Baldev Setia, Director PEC, in his address, expressed his gratitude to be part of the 75th Annual Athletic Meet. While addressing the gathering, he mentioned that sports teach one to win with grace and it also teaches one to lose with grace. Even after losing the game, we shake hands with the opposing team members. It signifies team work. He emphasized the importance of the discipline that sports inculcate in the players in their daily life and the importance of having a healthy body and mind in today’s stressful world. He wished all the students the best of luck and motivated them to have a healthy competition. While remembering the 1976 World Cup, Prof. Setia, recalled the radio announcement of India's win and mention of Shri Ajit Singh's Accomplishments.
With an enthusiastic start of the first day of the 75th Annual Athletic Meet, PEC completed the 1st day on a high note. A lot of track and field and throw events were organized and many participants from all the branches of the PEC participated in them. Some major track events like the 100 mts. race (boys), 100 mts. race (girls), and 200 mts. The race (boys) was conducted in heats and finals were conducted on the final day. Many more events like Cycling Events, Hurdle Races, Inter-Branch Relay Race, Tug of War and fun athletic events for faculty were also conducted.
