Engineers Day celebrated at PEC University of Technology

PEC University of Technology celebrated the 48th Engineer’s Day to commemorate the birthday of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, a legendary engineer and a scholar. Sir Visvesvaraya, an eminent Indian engineer and statesman born in Muddenahalli in Chikballapur, Karnataka was a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1955. Knighted by the British for his myriad contributions to the public good, he was internationally recognised for his brilliance in harnessing water resources.
The event started with the recitation of the PEC anthem, ‘We are PEC’. Following this, all the dignitaries paid a floral tribute to Sir Visvesvaraya. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr. S. C. Handa, Director-General, Quantum Global Campus, Roorkee and a Civil Engineering graduate of PEC (Batch of 1963). This Engineer’s Day was celebrated under the theme, ‘Engineering Challenges for the Knowledge Era’.
Highlighting the importance of the Knowledge Era, Director Dr. Manoj K Arora said that with the increasing emphasis on ‘Digital India’, ‘Smart Cities’ and ‘Bullet Trains’, knowledge had become the new mantra and inter-disciplinary innovations would deliver path-breaking technological solutions. He took pride in the fact that PEC had produced engineers of national and international repute in the last 90 years. He also saluted the institute’s active alumni base and congratulated the institute on making the new ‘Alumni Connect’ website global. DAA Prof. Praveen Kalra and Dean Alumni Affairs, Prof. K K Gogna were also present on the occasion.
Subsequently, Prof. Arun Kumar, Electronics Engineering Department, shared his research experience in the area of ‘Futuristic Nano-Electronic Devices’. He discussed the concept of ‘Ballistic Rectifier’, which performs the function of ‘Bridge Rectifier’ with the use of a single diode in place of 4 used in the bridge reactor. Later, Lakshay Khurana, Electronics Engineering Department and Agnit Mukhopadhyay, Aerospace Engineering Department shared their 6-month research experiences on ‘Brain Computer Interface’ and ‘Thermal Protection Systems of a Space Capsule’, respectively.
Dr. S. C. Handa, addressing the students, recalled his time at PEC and the lessons he received from former Principal, Prof. R N Dogra. Taking up the example of ‘Anand Kumar’ of ‘Super-30’ fame, he exhorted the students to have a passion in life. Speaking on ‘Taj Mahal’, Dr. Handa shared the history of the monument. He also shared interesting information about the technical marvels of ‘Taj Mahal’. He gave the example of structural marvels like the double dome and the marble screen which helps to cool the air that enters the monument. He also explained the type of foundation of the structure of ‘Taj Mahal’ and the marbles form Makrana, the stone that was used to make the monument.
The institute thanked Dr. S C Handa for his valuable lecture.
