IEEE Overview
From its earliest origins, the IEEE has advanced the theory and application of electro technology and allied sciences, served as a catalyst for technological innovation and supported the needs of its members through a wide variety of programs and services.
The IEEE is made up of 10 Regions, 36 Technical Societies, four Technical Councils, approximately 1,200 individual and joint Society chapters, and 300 Sections.

A Brief History

The IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers) -- Wireless Communications
Two largely local organizations -- the Society of Wireless and Telegraph Engineers and the Wireless Institute -- merged to form an international society for scientists and engineers involved in the development of wireless communications -- the Institute of Radio Engineers
AIEE (American Institute of Electrical Engineers) -- Wire Communications, Light and Power
From the beginning, the major interests of the AIEE were

1. wire communications and
2. light and power systems.

An early and active participant in the development of electrical industry standards, the Institute laid the foundations for all work on electrical standards done in the United States.

AIEE, IRE Merge
In 1961, the leadership of both the IRE and the AIEE resolved to seek an end to these difficulties through consolidation. The next year a merger plan was formulated and approved and became effective on 1 January 1963.
The new organization, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,

IEEE PEC CHAPTER

The mission of the IEEE chapter of PEC is to promote the growth of information and electrical technologies. The Center provides many useful resources to the members and anyone interested in the development of electrical and electronics ,computer engineering technology.
The IEEE student branch of Punjab Engineering College ,Chandigarh was formed through IEEE notification dated 7th Nov 1996 and formally inaugurated on 17th April , 1997 .
The student branch under the guidance of our reverend Principal and the Branch Counselor Dr. Gurnam Singh has grown from strength to strength. The students of PEC are provided with a platform where they can implement their innovative ideas and exchange their thoughts evolving into a collective technically strong unit.

In adddition to the students of Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science and Engineering and I.T., the students o fother fields are also welcome as associate members.

The list of activities organized by student branch are as follows:-

1. I.S.M.'s: The information sharing meeetings were the main activity regularly undertaken by IEEE student branch. Talks were presented by the student members as follows:
a. A talk on Neural Networks and their Applications by Mr. Sumeet Jindal, 2nd Year Comp. Sc. & Engg.
b. Talk on the utility of Fuel Cells by Mr. Divay Bansal, 2nd Year Comp. Sc. & Engg.
c. Talk on the latest technologies and working of LED's by Mr. Vikas Bansal, 2nd Year Electronics

2. The Technical Quiz: An intra college quiz on a wide range of topics ranging from science and information technology to history and general knowledge was organized by student branch to test the acumen and the knowledge of the students.
