PEC Students win Cash Prize worth Rs 1.4 lakhs at SAE Challenge

The SAE BAJA ASIA 2010 an annual event hosted by the SAE (Society for Automobile Engineers) was held from 28th to 31st January, 2010 at NATRIP (National Automobile Testing and Research & Development Infrastructure Project) facility Pithampur (Indore). Teams of engineering students from various institutions across India had to design and build a prototype four-wheeled, single-seater, off-road recreational vehicle. The team representing PEC University of Technology consisted of 18 students from Mechanical and Production engineering departments. The faculty advisor for the team was Prof. A.K. Lall. The team consisted of Vikas Singh, Harish Puri, Harjinder Singh Brar, Puneet Pal and Saurav Rathi from the final year and Mohit garg, Rohan Garg, Lakhwinder Singh, Kamal Garg, Harmanpreet Singh Maan,Sunil Chimpa, Mayank Jain, Varinder Pal Singh, Abhishek Patil, Abhay Singh Rathaur, Prince Malhotra, Abhishek Arora and Amit Kalia from third year. The team was named “Team RPM”.
The team worked on their ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) by keeping their major focus to make a compact vehicle, increasing performance by reducing the weight of the vehicle and minimizing the power losses. As they toiled hard in the workshops of the college to build up their vehicle from step to step, they were able to meet their deadlines well beforehand and be ready with their ATV on the desired day. The four-day event included static adjudication and performance testing and a three-hour endurance race on the last day. 80 colleges participated in this event this year. The event was judged by industrial experts from companies like Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti, ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), Cummins, NATRIP, ICAT, etc. The various college teams were judged on the performance of their cars as they underwent 2 sets of tests: Dynamic and Static. The team claimed 1st place in the Maneuverability test, 2nd place in presentation and was among the top 5 in Best Design that saw them winning collective prize money of Rs.1,40,000. The sponsors of the team included Swaraj Enterprises, KISS-SOFT and PEC University of Technology.
