Prof. Manoj K. Arora

Prof. Manoj K. Arora holds a Ph.D in Remote Sensing from Swansea University, UK. He was a post-doctoral research fellow for more than one and half years in a NASA sponsored project in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, Syracuse University, USA. He completed B.E. in Civil Engineering in 1984 from Punjab Engineering College (PEC) and M.E. in Civil Engineering in 1986 from IIT Roorkee).

He has about 30 years of teaching, research and administrative experience in academic institutions in India, UK and USA.

His significant outcomes in terms of numbers are; initiation and execution of 45 sponsored research and consultancy projects with funding to the tune of over Rs. 8 Crores, publication of two books and 16 book chapters, 230 research papers in International and National Journals and Conferences, 50 invited talks and keynote addresses, and Chair of several conference sessions. He has guided 20 Ph.D. thesis (and 5 currently registered) and 56 Masters dissertations. His current Google Scholar record is; citations: 4418, h-index: 32 and i10 index: 55.

He works in the areas of Remote Sensing, Surveying and Mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS) & Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and their applications. His allied research areas are Digital Image Classification, Soft Computing, Land Cover Mapping from Optical and Microwave Sensing, SAR Interferometry, Hazard and Risk Studies.

He has earned Outstanding Teacher Award twice at IIT Roorkee, the Commonwealth Scholarship Award for Ph. D. in UK, the DST Young Scientist Award, the AICTE Young Teacher Career Award, post-doctoral fellowship in a NASA sponsored project, USA,  and 3 best paper awards.

He has collaborated with a number of organisations both India and abroad. These include Syracuse University, USA; Getty Foundation, USA; University of Nottingham, UK; Norwegian Geotechnical Society, Norway; Defence Electronics Applications Laboratory (DRDO); Dehradun; Snow and Avalanche Establishment Center (DRDO), Chandigarh; Space Application Cente, Ahmedabad; Chandigarh Administration; IIIT Delhi; Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, Tehri; Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Delhi; Indian Railways, Delhi; Central Public Works Department, Delhi, Bhakra Beas Management Board, Punjab, and many more.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, and has been an active member of many professional societies including American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, Indian Society of Remote Sensing.

He is the Chairman of Regional Committee for North Western Region, AICTE, Co-chair of Chandigarh State Higher Education Council (SHEC), RUSA, Vice President of Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster, member, Research Council, CSIR-CSIO, Chandigarh.

He also serves on a number of committees of IITs, DRDO, UPSC, CSIR, UGC, AICTE and other organizations of excellence. Some examples are: Chairman of Regional Committee for North Western Region, AICTE; Member, Academic Advisory Council (AAC) Development of Online Courses for SWAYAM. He has also chaired a number of NBA teams.

He coordinated GATE 2009 at national level and sowed the seeds of GATE online in 2010, as Chairman GATE in respective years.

During his stay at PEC since July 1, 2013, he has brought several administrative & academic reforms and has strengthen the academia-industry interface. He has been instrumental in creating Kalpana Chawla Chair of Geospatial Technology from Indian Railways with an endowment of Rs. 10 Crores, and opening up of Smart City Innovation Center with the support of UT Administration and Punjab Government at PEC, Chandigarh.
